Wake County Public Schools announced today the launch of a district-wide AI-powered tutoring program that will provide personalized learning support to each of its 160,000-plus students, making it one of the largest implementations of educational AI technology in the United States.

The program, called LearnPath, uses adaptive AI to identify each student's strengths and areas for improvement, then generates customized practice exercises, explanations, and learning pathways. Students can access the system through school-issued devices during and after school hours.

"Every student learns differently, and we've never had the resources to provide truly individualized instruction at scale," said the superintendent. "This technology doesn't replace teachers — it gives them a powerful tool to meet each student where they are."

The $18 million investment, funded through a combination of federal education technology grants and district budget allocation, includes: - AI-powered tutoring in math, reading, and science for grades 3-12 - Real-time progress dashboards for teachers and parents - Professional development training for all instructional staff - Privacy protections including on-premises data storage

Early pilot results from 12 schools showed an average improvement of 15% in math assessment scores and 12% in reading comprehension among participating students over a single semester.

Critics have raised concerns about screen time, data privacy, and the potential for AI to deepen existing inequalities if not implemented equitably. The district has committed to ensuring equal access across all schools and monitoring for any disparities in usage or outcomes.

The program is scheduled for full deployment by the start of the fall 2026 semester.
